Veggie patch: Day one

Team Veggie started the long slog to self-sufficiency today.

Fellow veggie devotees Vicky, Joel and Hal dragged themselves over to the garden in true heroic fashion, after getting in on a long, late night flight back from their Egyptian holiday. Progress was immediate as the decision on where to put the patch was clear cut and digging began. Everyone got involved including the kids although the sand pit and hard-to-drive tractor were clear draw cards up the other end of the garden.

Jeff had already mentioned just how stony and full of glass the bottom end of our garden was but we found out first hand when some serious sieving was required to get a soil that was more soil than debris. I have no idea what had happened down there in the past, but it's like a greenhouse has been decimated by the tried and tested method of stoning. But we ended up with a nicely dug plot.

The kids had lots of fun finding the biggest worms and Pippy ate some dirt. I guess to compare the taste to sand? The boys are going to have a sunflower growing competition so the seeds were planted, alongside peas - regular and sugar-snap.

Next time, we'll tackle the second plot (so many veggies to grow!) and plant some more seeds.
