London 2012. Our day out with Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome
The UK has been gripped in Wiggo-mania ever since the man from Madia Vale won the Tour de France. People are wondering around with stick on side burns and taking up cycling at an alarming rate.
So with not a lot of notice and Oliver on a football course with Joe and Coach Stephen, Pip and I decided to head out to see Wiggo and the Team GB for the Time Trials with our friend Anna, Billy and Ted. We didn't want to miss out on a chance to see the best of the best only a mere 30 minute train ride away.
Except the train driver decided that we didn't need to stop at Esher, our designated station. He took the executive decision that where we really needed to go was Surbiton and went there instead. This managed to displease an entire train full of cycling enthusiasts.
Once we had got over the panic of seeing our station go past, it wasn't long before we'd found a return train and found our way to Esher. One coffee later, we'd got a good spot with nobody in front of us and waited for the girls to scream by. Not long afterwards they began their time trials. 90 seconds apart and they kept coming. Super fast and the crowds were so loud. You could hear when the next rider was coming from the roar...
Even more so when the men started after a short break. Chris and Wiggo were last but one to come and we got chatting to some friends who seemed to know what was going on due to a reliable internet connection. I relied on Jeff texting or calling when someone important set off. We were only about five minutes from the start so we didn't have to wait long.
After we'd seen the last of the men we headed back towards the station and over to the roundabout were they sped past one more time. Tired and happy we headed back home with muffins for celebration for Gold and Bronze!
Esher had done a great job of organising the area and it being our first experience of the Olympics we were stunned by the fantastic organisation and cheerfulness of the volunteers. Every rider had a lead policeman on a bike and 3 cars following them. Each brand spanking new BMW 3 series. There was a big screen on the green and hundreds of children just going mental running around. The atmosphere was great and I'm so pleased we went. A really good day out that we won't forget it a hurry.
