December update

So it's been a while since I've updated our blog. You'll have to forgive us, but the lead up to Christmas has been full of sickness, sickness and more sickness. I am desperately hunting around for reasons other than crap weather and 'there's something going round'. So I'm blaming Jeff's weak gene pool.

In between getting in the festive spirit, Pip is now causing all manner of chaos with walking and going through his destructor phase. Nothing, including kitchen equipment, the Christmas trees or Oliver's carefully laid out train tracks are immune. Oliver is finding it increasingly difficult to play along without getting frustrated but then there are moments of melting gorgeousness (like the other day when I caught him playing Round and Round the Garden on Pip's hand).

Over the past couple of weeks, we've all been ill. Oliver with a tummy bug that consists of him coughing for an hour from 3-4am and eventually vomiting every night and Pip projectile vomiting all over himself and the car seat. Nice. But I think we're on the way up, fingers crossed. I was sick with a 24hour flu-ey type bug and boy did I let everyone know it. I don't 'do' sick and Jeff was about ready to strangle me by the end of the day. Karma got him right back though and he ended up on the sofa the next day, feeling very sorry for himself. And of course, we've all got the obligatory snivelly noses and hacking coughs. Glad to be back amongst British weather and germs? You betcha.

I was a naughty mum though, and insisted on sending Oliver to his week of pre-school induction before he was 100%. He calls it that 'school place', and seemed to enjoy going. Although he was very confused when Po wasn't there. He'd heard Po talking about his school and couldn't understand why his school wasn't the same as Po's. I tried to explain how we wouldn't be getting on a long-haul plane back to Sydney for some time unless someone really important carks it. He didn't get it.

The nursery is called Tigglets and is a Montessori school very similar to the one we went to in Balmain: run by a hard-core headmistress, lots of small fiddley things for the kids to spill and then have to tidy up, and list of rules like 'be nice to people'. Although the headmistress has a more interesting name this time: Mrs Candy Head. Yes, really. Oliver starts three afternoons a week in January and I'm so excited - more than him sadly. We've got the uniform and I have to stop myself from getting all teary when I look at it. I don't get out much.

We are slowly getting into the Christmas spirit too. We went and bought our Christmas tree last weekend and Oliver and Pip decorated it. All the decorations are in a 10cm square patch, about Pip height. Jeff made a wreath for the front door and is talking about making a gingerbread house. If you were wondering, I'm not sure where the real Jeff has gone either. Andy Williams's Christmas Album isn't on repeat yet, but we're nearly at that stage. It's all good stuff. And the odds are really short for a white Christmas this year, which would be tops.

Roll on Father Christmas, excessive overeating and copious amounts of drinking mulled wine. Have yourselves a very festive season and happy New Year. We'll raise a glass for you in the freezing cold and we hope 2009 is good to you.

Em, Jeffy, Oliver and Pip x
