Classic Oliver quote

"Mama, I'm so starvingly thirsty"
He is always starving hungry or really, really thirsty. I do feed and water him occasionally. Promise.

A good English summer

A good English summer consists of a few things in my book. Wimbledon (to see the freaky forearm disparities of the tennis players), fetes and picnics complete with soggy sandwiches and strawberries and cream.

We've been to a few fetes (Farnham carnival, Tilford and the Bourne fetes) these past weekends and partaken in our fair share of coconut shys, teacup rides and lukewarm cups of strong tea. The boys have seen their first wheelbarrow race, village dog show, sack race and tug of war. With the weather predictably changeable, it's been debateable whether to bring sunscream or raincoats but we've had a very lovely time and felt like part of a real community bumping into familiar faces wherever we've been.

But the highlight of the lot was our very own street party. St George's Road (under the loose umbrella of The Big Lunch) held its own picnic in the park with all our neighbours invited. Despite the promise of downpours that thankfully never quite materialised, the turnout was amazing, with over 50 people bringing their rugs, chairs, thermos flasks and picnics to join in the frivolity. We had an impromptu game of cricket, a tug of war and lots of chatting about the comings and goings of St George's Road. We had tiny babies, lots of toddlers, and even a great-grandma born on the street come. A very lovely day well organised by Vicky with a little help from a few of us mums. Roll on next year... Check out our blog - just how up with technology are we?! More photos will be forthcoming...

And we still got the summer holidays to come!
